Malabari Goats
The first recognised breed of Kerala among livestock. The Kerala agricultural University has done extensive research work since the early 70s. Initially it was on crossbreeding with exotic Alpine and Saanen goats. After many years of research, the results on the crossbreds were not very encouraging. So ICAR dropped the crossbreeding programme and sanctioned a project for Selection and Genetic improvement in Malabari goats. Dr.K.C.Raghavan is carrying out the work in the native tract with farmers and also in the goat farm of the University.

Government Goat Farm Komeri is another farm rearing Malabari goats. Vechur Conservation Trust has started farmer units for conservation of the breed. The main threat to the Malabari goats is the invasion of the Boer goats and also goats from other parts of the country to the breeding tract of Malabari resulting in the dilution of the breed.
